The Pettah Bazaar Walk

What this tour is about: This is a walk through Colombo’s busy and colourful Pettah market area. Pettah refers to the multi-cultural township that came up outside the 16th century Portuguese fort in Colombo. The fort was later demolished, but Pettah continues to thrive as a busy local bazaar and commercial area. It has not only a multitude of shops and open air stalls, but also many interesting colonial heritage buildings.

We will start at the Khan Clock Tower, which marks the entrance to Pettah. From here, we will walk through the market area, with different lanes specializing in different goods. Textiles, spices, dry goods, fruits and vegetables, all have specialized shops of their own. During the walk, we will also see some historic buildings such as the Red Mosque, the Old Town Hall and Kayman’s Gate.

At the end of the walk, we will stop for refreshments at a local restaurant. After this, we will help you find transport back to your hotel.
